The upcoming new year will bring new hopes for your career. This is an ideal time for HR to reflect on the past and start thinking about how to refresh their lives and work in the coming time. Starting a new year is a great opportunity to set goals, review work methods, improve personal productivity, and think about how you can grow and take things to the next level.

You don’t always have to make big, groundbreaking changes – as most businesses have likely made more significant changes in the past year than in many previous years combined. However, with the hope that 2021 can begin to see work return to normal and stabilize, a few small adjustments in how you work and approach things might be all that’s needed to keep moving forward.

For those who want to make a fresh start or shake things up a bit, here are a few suggestions.

1. Don’t overpromise – Know how to prioritize correctly

If you overpromise, you are setting yourself up for failure. Most HR professionals are extremely busy – and the crises of the past year have only exacerbated this.

Leadership wants the latest statistics on headcount and retention rates; managers are emailing about disciplinary issues and grievances; policies need updating, video interviews need to be conducted, inductions arranged, sick leave managed, and so on.

Everyone thinks HR has a magic wand that will solve all their problems. Trying to do every task is not feasible – and trying to be all things to all people will only lead to stress and burnout.

Take a step back and think about what your priorities are, what is realistic for you to achieve, and how you can set boundaries and manage others’ expectations of what you can and should provide.

2. Manage your time effectively and intelligently

Are you really managing your time well? Do you find yourself chasing your tail or getting interrupted and distracted by trivial things that prevent you from getting to grips with important tasks?

There are some common “traps” that we all fall into…

Letting email “dominate” your day is probably the biggest one. Turn off notifications on your computer and phone so you aren’t tempted to stop what you are doing every time a new message pops up. Most emails do not require an instant response. Try setting aside a few specific time slots to read emails and then get back to focusing on your priority tasks.

Additionally, multitasking is another bad habit to break. Trying to do multiple things at once will just tire your brain out. Focusing on one thing at a time can make a huge difference to your productivity.

A particularly useful method is to ‘Eat the frog’ (from the book ‘Eat That Frog’ by Brian Tracy). The “frog” is your biggest, most important task, the one you are most likely to procrastinate on if you don’t do something about it. The basic principle of this method is that you will still do other things, but your most important task (often the most difficult one requiring the most energy and focus) will be prioritized before all the other less important but more urgent things get in the way. This method requires us to push back all distractions, both external and internal, to prioritize the actions that truly bring us closer to our goals

3. Listen more

This may sound simple, but it’s easy to get so bogged down in getting through the ever-growing pile of tasks that we stop paying attention to what people in the business are saying.

Sometimes, just giving a manager or employee your full attention and really listening to their issues can prevent unnecessary disagreements at work. It can also provide a great “source of ideas” on how to organize work – or you might pick up on signals that one of your talented employees is starting to feel unhappy or unsettled and is at risk of looking elsewhere.

Listen and truly understand what is not being said as much as what is being openly expressed. The ability to listen and interact will help you create new empathy and understanding.

4. Save time and effort – Don’t sweat the small stuff

If you haven’t already, make 2021 the year you embrace automation technology. A good HR management software can help you escape overload and time-consuming tasks by automating core processes.

It will help you scientifically manage human resources while bringing consistency and transparency to performance management processes.

A human resource management software system will also allow managers to easily access information about their employees. From there, they can easily exchange information with their staff, as well as conveniently evaluate, identify skill gaps, and plan for projects and manage workflows.

In 2020, technology became more important than ever as many people had to switch to working from home due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the development of digital technology, solving management challenges for leaders in general and HR managers in particular has become easier with supporting software.
