Combined with behavioral analytics data, a large survey was conducted on the social network LinkedIn with over 5,000 human resource management and recruitment specialists. The results show that the work environment in recent years has been strongly influenced by 4 factors:

  • Soft skills;
  • Workplace;
  • Anti-harassment culture;
  • Transparency in pay policies.

1. The trend of developing soft skills continues to assert its position

Today, soft skills are increasingly proving their importance. In fact, up to 92% of survey participants agree that soft skills are very important. And more than 80% believe that soft skills play a crucial role in a company’s success.

Most human resource management experts also emphasize that poor hiring decisions often stem from candidates lacking soft skills. This factor is difficult to detect during the recruitment process. Therefore, it is usually only after a candidate is officially hired that the employer can know what soft skills their employee possesses.

The biggest headache for many recruiters is assessing a candidate’s soft skills. Over 65% said the most common method recruiters use is observing gestures and communication during the interview. However, this method is only effective if the candidate is not affected by anxiety and if what they show on the outside truly matches their inner self. At the same time, recruiters should also ensure they have the ability to accurately interpret the candidate’s communication gestures.

2. The flexible workplace in development trends

In the past, working from home was the desire of many people. But with the development and advancement of technology, this has gradually become a trend and more common. The Global HR Director of Cisco technology group – Jason Phillips said, “The flexible workplace is gradually becoming a standard. The challenge for organizations is how quickly they can meet those needs”.

Behind this shifting development trend is the advancement of technology: Email, messaging apps, online conferencing services, or social networks. In other words, connecting with people has never been easier. This makes it understandable why the physical workplace is no longer as important as it used to be.

However, people’s views on work have also gradually changed over time. The idea of having a single profession or job for life no longer exists. Instead, people want the flexibility to access more jobs. They want to have a more flexible, balanced, and colorful life.

3. Anti-harassment and bullying in the workplace

On ethical principles, employers have a responsibility to protect their employees from all forms of bullying or harassment. In some cases, this action also includes legal responsibility. For anti-harassment policies to be truly effective, businesses need to build a culture that promotes solidarity and mutual support.

Individuals and organizations that fail to implement measures to stop harassment or deal with harassers will face the risk of damage to the company’s reputation and image.

4. Open and transparent pay policies

Over 93,000 Americans think they are paid well compared to the average. But more than 2/3 stated that their current salary is not commensurate with their effort. The serious problem is that, even without knowing how others or colleagues are paid, most believe they are the lowest-paid. This gives rise to negative suspicion and leads to dissatisfaction with superiors.

Based on content shared on its platform, the professional social network LinkedIn reports that pay transparency has increased by 136% since 2014. The practice of keeping employee salaries secret is likely to come to an end.

A transparent pay policy will help build lasting trust, strengthen cultural diversity and inclusion in the workplace, and also reduce salary negotiation time during interviews. Therefore, this could become a trend that will have a strong impact on the work environment in the near future.
